With the startup of the Lekki Deep-sea Port this year, a new phase in Nigeria’s port industry was opened, adding to the country’s reputation as a maritime nation and enlarging the basket of operational challenges as well. Some of these challenges are statutory whereas others are process-driven. For example, environmental compliance in line with the benchmarks of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is mandatory whereas the depths and widths of the channels chosen for the increasing number of the ports are well within our rights to choose, subject to affordability.
Another major focus for Nigeria is the introduction of CNG vehicles to solve the energy crisis caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. Dredgers use a lot of bunker and operational vehicles consume PMS and AGO as well. Hence, solutions from CNG vehicle dealers are welcome in the dredging industry. The automobile and automotive industry are invited to exhibit their wares and services.
Furthermore, with the kick-starting of the deep-sea port, the country also entered the regional contest for patronage and dominance against the other vibrant ports in neighbouring West and Central African, to whom we had been losing direct and transshipment cargoes since the 1980s. Nigeria now has the facility to up the ante of the competition and surpass her rivals in the port industry services chain of command.
In view of the foregoing, the traditional focal points of the Nigerian Dredging Summit and Exhibition series include developments in the port and maritime sector, the trend of activities with the seaport terminal operators, deep-sea and deep-water port developments, harbour dredging and hydrographical services, channel and harbour dredging issues, the linkages with the oil and gas sector, sand mining and environmental remediation projects, reclamation and beach replenishment, and stakeholders’ interests in profitable venturing to maximize real and potential market shares to reposition and satisfy clients and customers more often or for successful policy implementation.
Nevertheless, the issues of additional interest this year revolve around logistics contingencies triggered by the launch of the Lekki Deep-sea port, such as its long-term prospects to advance the Nigerian industry and economy among the sub-regional maritime nations. Second, the dreaded fallout of the infrastructure deficit for moving cargoes between the port and the hinterland, on the one hand, and between the hinterland and the entirety of the Lagos port system, on the other, poses likely threats to the delicate gains made by the NPA’s ETO truck call-up system in the Apapa-Tin Can Island Port axis of the mega-city. What are the environmental challenges and the solutions?
