The Other side of Dredging: Sand Mining by artisans - The Ifesowaso Associates of Ebute Ilaje in Lagos Nigeria


A community of artisanal sand miners at Ebute Ilaje in Bariga local government of Lagos State in Nigeria is famed for sand mining from the Lagos lagoon. The Ifesowaso Associates produce sharp sand, soft and filling sand, all from the lagoon, but not at all from the immediate shoreline. Dredging International wins Canal contract
THE Panama Canal Authority has awarded its largest contract to date, for the dredging of the Pacific entrance to the Canal, to Dredging International. The Belgian firm's winning bid was $177.5M. Two other bidders, Boskalis International and a consortium of Jan de Nul and Van Oord, had presented offers of $258.8M and $485.4M respectively. More...

Ellicott Dredges Begins Joint Venture, Dredge Training, with Japaul Marine Plc.
Ellicott Dredges LLC of Baltimore USA has sealed a working joint venture with Japaul Oil and Maritime Services PLC in an agreement under which they plan a faster service programme for their Nigerian and West African customers. The joint venture goes with the name of Japaul Ellicott ( West Africa) Ltd. Speaking during a one-day workshop which the company held for its Nigerian customers in Lagos in April, Peter Eberle, Ellicott’s managing director for major projects and joint ventures, announced that under the arrangement, spare parts, inventory services and training packages will be made available to the Nigerian market beginning in a few months time.

Harris Dredging and 3 others win N3.88b Lagos ferry routes dredging contracts
Harris Dredging and Marine Services has won a N3b contract channelisaton contract for the Lagos State Government. This is part of contracts the state government awarded to four firms for dredging and channelisation of ferry routes. Total sum of the project is N3.881 billion. The dredging locations include the Tolu/Ajegunle-Tin Can Waterfront and the Port Novo Creek to the Liverpool Bridge Basin, which was awarded to Razz International and FBN Nigeria Limited, at a cost of N482 million. The Lagos State-Federal Government Tussle on Inland Waterways.

The tussle over who controls inland waterways in Lagos State is now at the front burner. A serious dialogue between Lagos State Government officials and those of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, especially the National Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA is afoot. The Presidency has advised its negotiators to seek ways to arrive at mutual agreements over all contentious issues. As a last resort, the Presidency thinks that a recourse to the Supreme Court for interpretation of extant laws on the matter is advisable. More...
